This painting is inspired by the sheer beauty of the Lindis Pass in the South Island and the New Zealand Takahe which used to live throughout New Zealand.
Today there is only a remnant population of Takahe found in the mountains of Fiordland known as the Murchison Mountains. Their significant decline has been the result of hunting, introduced predators and habitat loss. Conservation programmes, such as the Takahe Recovery Centre, have established additional populations.
Takahe predominantly inhabit grassland, using shrubs for shelter. This painting considers that, with its abundant tussock grasslands, Takahe once lived freely around the magnificent Lindis Pass area and, in a perfect world, may do so again.
