This painting depicts the endemic New Zealand rock wren on the edge, not only of a rock surveying its alpine habitat, but also in terms of its vulnerability.
The rock wren is a small alpine bird found in the Southern Alps of the South Island and is the only truly alpine bird in New Zealand. It is a poor flier spending most of its time hopping and flitting through its alpine surroundings of boulders and shrubbery foraging for food such as insects, spiders and fruit. It also nests on the ground so is an easy target for introduced predators, particularly stoats.
As the conservation status of the rock wren changed from nationally vulnerable to nationally endangered in 2013, the survival of this bird is 'on the edge'.
Fauna Recovering New Zealand has more information about this bird and ongoing conservation efforts.
